In order to be successful on the Internet you need a domain name that belongs to you. This should represent you or your business in some fashion.  It can be a clever name to make it easy to remember, but it is important to keep it short so that it is easy to memorize. One major mistake is when you tag onto someone else’s domain name i.e. http://www.hartcom.net/billsplumbing.html, http://geocities.com/marysshop.html.

These types of domains do not give your company a professional appearance and individualism and are not effective for marketing your website.  At one time domain names were up to $95 a year, but now you can buy a domain name for ten years for that amount. So if you are going to spend the money and take the time to have an Internet site, do it the right way and buy your own domain name.
